Position Summary
The Substitute Food Service/Nutrition Assistant fills in as needed to support daily meal service, operating the point-of-sale cash register, assisting with food preparation and serving, and maintaining a clean and sanitary cafeteria environment. This is an as-needed substitute position with no guarantee of hours.
Primary Job Functions
Accurately operate the school's computerized POS cash register system to process student breakfast and lunch transactions.
Process student meal payments, add funds to student accounts, and reconcile the cash drawer at the end of each shift.
Ensure all meals claimed by students meet state and federal reimbursement requirements.
Assist with general food preparation, setting up serving lines, and serving appropriate food portions.
Assist in cleaning cafeteria tables, washing kitchen equipment and utensils, and storing supplies.
Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary work environment in accordance with food safety standards.
Provide quality, positive customer service to students, staff, and the community.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Job Requirements
Physical requirements associated with the position can be best summarized as follows:
Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer and Point of Service (POS) devices, and reach with hands and arms; must routinely lift and/or carry up to 40-50 pounds and stand for extended periods. Duties are performed in a typical school food service setting, with minimal environmental hazards and risks associated with the nature of the work.
Job Specifications (Education, License, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent education.
Able to read and write in English.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Attend and complete 4 hours of annual training related to food safety, sanitation, and POS operations.
Ability to work independently.
Strong math skills and basic computer/POS literacy.
Ability to lift/carry up to 40-50 pounds and stand for extended periods.
Ability to pass a criminal background check.
Desired:
Previous cashiering, money-handling, or customer service experience, ideally in a school or institutional food service setting.
Knowledge of food production, serving, and clean-up procedures.
Attend the Back-to-School Workshop/Training and applicable staff meetings each school year.
